Seasoned, in-house patent counsel hired to further expand portfolio and develop strategy around PicPocket’s geofencing IP for Enterprise “-as-a-Service”, JV and IP licensing opportunities.

PicPocket-Labs (“PicPocket”) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Steven P. Marsh as Special IP Counsel. Dr. Marsh’s strong technical background includes a B.S. (Magna cum Laude) and M.S. in Chemical Engineering, and Ph.D. in Materials Engineering, all from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He has held research positions at the venerable Max Planck Institute and the US Naval Research Laboratory – where, coincidentally, the origin and development of GPS (Global Positioning Systems) first took place almost sixty-five years ago.

Dr. Marsh obtained his J.D. at Fordham University School of Law. He developed his patent litigation and prosecution experience at the respected New York law firm of Fish & Neave (which merged with Ropes & Grey in 2004), and continued at the firms of Frommer, Lawrence & Haug (now Haug Partners), Dorsey & Whitney, and Goodwin Procter, before hanging his own shingle to become Special IP Counsel for Mass. General Hospital – the largest hospital-based research program in the United States. Dr. Marsh has worked directly with several prominent researchers at MGH/Harvard Medical, including Dr. Rox Anderson, Dr. Dieter Manstein, and Dr. William Austen, and developed patent portfolios for various technologies in the medical field. He has more recently done significant patent work related to medical imaging for Siemens Healthcare.

According to Dr. Marsh, “I am impressed by the breadth of PicPocket’s patent portfolio, and the wide range of industries that can benefit from implementations of PicPocket’s core technologies; I look forward to expanding the scope of PicPocket’s patent portfolio as its geo-based IT services are adopted by various commercial sectors.”

Now overseeing all patent prosecution for PicPocket-Labs, Dr. Marsh is responsible for strengthening the company’s IP portfolio, including filing of continuations for various allowed and pending US and foreign patent applications, and the drafting of new applications to obtain further protection for more recent PicPocket-Labs technologies.

“We are very fortunate to have been able to attract as accomplished a patent attorney as Dr. Marsh,” states Wolfram K. Gauglitz, President and CEO, PicPocket-Labs, Inc. “Steven’s deep technical expertise and years of experience working for some of the country’s leading intellectual property firms, make him ideally suited to manage PicPocket-Labs’ growing IP portfolio.”

“Mark Twain once said that a country without a patent office and good patent laws “cannot travel any way but sideways and backways.” The same could be said about a technology startup which doesn’t invest in experienced patent counsel to safeguard its IP,” remarked Gauglitz. “It all starts with engaging the best possible patent counsel. Taking steps to preserve one’s intellectual property and then building a moat around your position. You accomplish this by working closely with your patent attorney and by promoting a company culture that rewards constant brainstorming and out-of-the-box thinking” continues Gauglitz. “The team and I look forward to engaging Steven’s talents further as we seek to build on an already commanding position with regard to all things geofencing and geo-related media.”
